It doesn't appear that our listserv allows for attachments! I'll send my DB rubric to you directly, Mary. Rick, perhaps you can do the same.

Mary,

I have attached a spread sheet which I use to grade online discussion forums. I built this to help me avoid being too subjective, although it cannot be totally avoided.

It is set for up to 4 questions, with a place to change the total points awarded. Grades are calculated based on the weight given in column B with the following allocation:

In each case the one grading would enter a percentage value based on a 100% scale (so excellent would equal 100%, while 65% would indicate a failed grade, but with reasonable effort, and 0% would equal no effort made - of course any number in between can be entered, which affects the final grade)

5% for posting the initial post on-time
65% for the content of the initial post (I don't have a rubric for this but generally assign a number of lines and have some key concepts which have to be touched on)
5% for adequate participation in the discussion (you gauge this as you wish - if you require 2 responses the give a 100% if they provide both and 50% if they only provide 1 and 0% if none)
25% for quality of responses (again subjective)

If you don't enter anything into the response section, the percentages shift to the content area for the initial response. All the calculations for the grading are on the second page of the workbook.

I don't know if this is what you were asking for but it has been a big help for me. After I grade each student's participation, I copy the data into a word document for later verification if needed and to be able to answer questions.

Subject: [ACCESS News] Rubrics

Several of our online professors have asked to see some examples of rubrics for discussion board postings. I thought it might be helpful for them to see several "varieties" so that they can incorporate that material into their classes. Does anyone have some examples they can share?

Thank you,

Mary
