Julie,
Good question and some excellent follow up! At Moody when we finish a course revision/development, it is put into a 2 year review cue. Of course, major changes to a course (textbook revision, major issues, updated scholarship, etc.) that cannot wait for 24 months can be done at any time necessary. We incorporated the necessity of revision into our design standards so the course could be revised with 1/10th the effort put into the development phase.
As for contracting revisions, we follow this policy: Course development pays for development through corrections needed after running the course through a pilot semester. Then, any major revisions would be contracted separately including the 2 year review.
Part of the teaching contract, however, is to provide feedback on what works and doesn't work and any corrections the instructor feels would help the course. This feedback (including student feedback) is funneled through our course development department. Minor fixes are done by the department. Major changes run through a separate contract and approval process.
Dennis' 4-step process is a simple yet excellent criteria to go with.

Hello all,
As I work with faculty to expand our online course offerings, one of the questions I wrestle with is when and how do we make revisions to those courses. It seems that just after a course is completed would be the best time.
I am curious as to how other institutions do this. Is this part of the teaching contract or a course writer's contract? Is it a formal or informal process?
I look forward to your responses,

We rely mostly on a course development staff.

Julie,
We consider course revisions using the following triggers:
1. Whenever a textbook in the course goes out of print.
2. Whenever a professor gets enough complaints about one or more of
the elements in the course.
3. Whenever the professor believes that a revision is necessary.
4. All courses are reviewed every two years for revision potential
(course professor, department dean and at least two members of the
academic committee).
We have found this method to be practical.
God bless you in your ministry at Huntington,
Dennis
